TNWS supplier Emma-Jane Photography shares her advice on choosing the right photographer and getting the best pictures on your big day.
Wedding photography can be a tricky supplier to decide upon. Unlike some suppliers, the photographer is with you for the whole day as well as meetings before and after the day, deciding on albums and a fair amount of communication if done right. So you need to be able to get on with your photographer.
Timings
You need to also be able to decide what you would like out of your photography. One of the main problems I encounter is there not being enough time left between the ceremony and the dinner for photography. Now this is not to say that the photography is going to take up all of that time. But there needs to be enough time to get the shots that you want as well as having the time to mingle and enjoy your day.
Planning
One of the best things to do is get organised with your photographer. Ask how long they think they will need to do the group shots (depending how many you need) as well as couple shots and the locations you want. They will give you a realistic time frame. If this is too long, then there might be things that need to be cut with the images to make sure you have a healthy balance that is right for you.
Family shots
Once this is agreed, think about how you want to do your shots. Certain shots will need to have more structure, such as elderly relatives who cannot move very far. So think about a nice backdrop but where they don’t have to move very far. This will also allow the day to run more to timing as this will make sure that there is not too much time moving people to one end of the venue to the other.
Bridal party shots
Once you get to the bridal party, look to create some fun images with your bridal party. These can be a mixture of serious shots but also have some fun. These will be friends and family who have seen you at your best and your worst. So make sure you create some lasting memories. Think about using the background of the venue the most as well as any ideas for props, especially if it is raining.
Couple shots
When it comes to your couple shots, make sure you have a good amount of time for these. This is the time to reflect on the day as a newly married couple, have some quiet time and also get some images of the first time you are a married couple. Create a series of romantic shots, close cuddles and kisses. As well as anything fun and atmospheric. Ask your photographer for ideas and scout the venue beforehand to get the best shots possible. Especially if there is an overrunning of timings, you might need to get these shots done quicker, so knowing where to take these will be key.
