With all the excitement and exhilaration that comes with your engagement, it’s easy to get carried away with wedding planning and make some costly mistakes! Fear not, we here at The Wood Norton have learnt from the errors of others ways, and wish to impart our wisdom on to you. So read carefully and take note, as here are some common wedding planning mistakes that can easily be avoided:

Don’t forget your budget

Ever heard the phrase ‘I can get lost in Pinterest for hours’ – well it’s true, and when planning your wedding it’s easy to fall in love with beautiful images that are often unaffordable. We recommend taking some time out before hitting the shops [and social media sites] to really calculate your budget. Make sure you and your partner are both happy with the estimates and decide on a small contingency fund for unexpected costs.  Our top tip is to create a spreadsheet to help you keep track of costs… it still amazes me when people have no idea how much they have spent on their wedding.

I’m late, I’m late for an important date!

If you’ve not got married before it’s difficult to know how long you will need for hair and makeup, let alone how long a three-course meal for 80 guests will take! However, it’s vital to get this right or you’ll be rushing the day from start to finish. We suggest you speak to your venue and suppliers ahead of time, and ask for their input and then use this information to create a clear plan of your day.

It’s all DIY too much!

Crafting and DIY is bang on trend right now but be realistic on how long it will take and how cost effective it really is. Once you’ve bought the sequins, glitter spray and sharpie pens for 100 name place cards, have you really saved any money? If you’re feeling the need to DIY why not throw a craft party and have your friends and family help. Remember lots of helping hands saves time and relieves pressure!

Take precautions

All being well your wedding will go without a hitch, but after spending so much time, effort and money planning your big day it makes sense to protect yourself just in case something goes wrong. This is where wedding day insurance comes in.

Wedding insurance is designed to make sure you’re not left out of pocket if things don’t go to plan on your special day. It’s relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of a wedding, with the cheapest wedding insurance policies starting from around £20. If you choose carefully, wedding insurance can give you complete peace of mind that even if things don’t go to plan, you won’t lose out financially.

Relax and Enjoy!

Aside from spreadsheets and timetables planning your wedding is meant to be an enjoyable experience! Don’t fall into the trap of overthinking every detail, as it will only succeed in sucking all the fun from it. If you’ve taken time over your decisions and done your research, there’s no reason why your day won’t go smoothly.
